What is Systema?
This is a big question. The history of Systema dates back to the 10th century developed on the battlefields of Russia. Eventually being used by Spetnez units, Russia’s special forces.
Essentially Systema is a Russian Martial Art based on four underlying principles of Form/Posture, Breathing, Movement, and Relaxation. As a student, you’ll build your skill and knowledge off of those four principles. Sytsema is a big topic for discussion and we can’t do it justice trying to define what Systema is on this FAQ page. The only way to find out about Systema is to try this Russian Martial Art yourself.
What are classes like?
Classes are very open and friendly with discussions between student and instructor. Everything is very hands on working with your fellow students as well as the instructor.
What is the cost of training?
Your first class is a free trial class. We hope you’ll see the benefits of Systema during your first class and come back for more. Our monthly fees for unlimited access of Systema training 3 days a week is $175. We also offer a mat fee of $25.
Why do you train slow?
This is one of the most asked questions concerning Systema and one that causes the most misunderstanding. Yes, we do train slowly in most classes. But not everything in Systema is slow. We train slowly sometimes to better understand our mistakes and possibility of movement. We like to say – slow is smooth, smooth is fast.
Do you grapple/wrestle in Systema?
Yes. Systema is a complete system which includes ground fighting.
Do you train with weapons?
Yes. We look at weapons in both defensive and offensive application.
Do I need anything for a Systema class?
All you need is an open mind and good attitude.
What is the best way to start training?
Come in and try a class. Better to jump both feet in rather then watch a class or two before joining the fun.
Do you offer any children classes?
Sorry but we do not offer any children classes in Systema at this time.
What should I wear to class?
There is no required uniform for training in Systema. We recommend comfortable pants and shirts that won’t hinder your movement. Some students also wear mat shoes in class.
Is there a beginner class?
All levels of students are in the same class. There is no beginner or advanced classes. But this shouldn’t scare you away. We find that beginners and advanced students can learn from each other.
